Knowledge

A homestead exemption allows a homeowner to receive a reduction in the assessed value for the use of their home as a principal residence. The amount of the reduction varies by county. Often, homeowners who are disabled veterans or the un-remarried surviving spouse of a firefighter or peace officer killed in the line of duty, age 65 or older, or completely disabled may qualify for additional exemptions.

Contact your county’s homestead tax department for additional details. In general, homeowners can file for their homestead exemption at any time but the deadline to file for the current year is April 1.
